In Lake County, there is no coordinated response to accidents involving hazardous materials, even though potentially lethal cargos of such substances are shipped through the area every day.
Police and other emergency personnel often arrive at the scenes of such accidents ill-equipped and with minimum training.
The situation is a dangerous one, acknowledged for years by federal, state and local officials.
