Indiana college freshmen know a little bit about world geography but not much at all about "human geography," an Indianapolis professor says.
Frederick L. Bein, chairman of the geography department at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, studied the results of standardized geography tests taken by 3,382 freshmen at 18 public colleges and universities to reach his conclusions.
Bein said scores on the National Council for Geographic Education's Competency-Based Geography Test reflect stark deficiencies in elementary and high school geography courses.
