Estimated population: 170,000. Much of the population is Creole, descended from former slaves. East Indians, Chinese, Salvadorans and Europeans also live there. Mayan, Carib and other Indians live in the interior. The English-speaking nation has traditionally been more aligned with the Caribbean Basin nations than its Spanish-speaking Central American neighbors. But Belize is becoming more Hispanic, with thousands of refugees fleeing El Salvador and Nicaragua.
