Terry Rose has done the experiment many times. He drops the mercuric oxide into a test tube and holds a torch under it.
The mercuric oxide evaporates. The oxygen is released into the air. The mercury is released from the compound. It vaporizes, then condenses at the cooler end of the tube as droplets of mercury.
He's made a silver, liquid metal from an orange powder.
