Our County Board wants us to pay an additional sales tax to improve roads in Lake County. Road improvements listed in The News Sun on Jan. 5 are all state of Illinois roads.
The average motorist in Lake County is now paying $240 per year in gas taxes to the state of Illinois. This is based on 12,000 miles per year at 15 mpg for 800 gallons of gas times the state tax of 30 cents per gallon which equals the $240. We have seen little benefit for the amount of money we pay into the state road fund.
