Article: Medical fitness centers changing focus

AURORA -- Fitness centers, once places buzzing mainly with buff and toned twenty-somethings, have taken on a new demographic in recent years: children. Areas once deemed "play areas" to keep children occupied while their parents exercised are now filled with kid-sized exercise equipment. "Parents would like (their children) to be in a more directed fitness program," said Ed Buda, general manager at Rush-Copley Medical Center's Healthplex, which transformed its play area into a children's workout area about a year ago.

Research showing growth in obesity and inactivity among children in recent years has prompted medical-based fitness centers to include these areas.
