Naperville skater Evan Lysacek got off to a big start on the first night of competition at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Portland, Ore.
He is in third place heading into Saturday's free skate. Former U.S. Champion and 2002 Olympic bronze medalist Timothy Goebel is in first place. Defending U.S. Champion Johnny Weir is in second.
"All around it was my best performance of this program. I'm glad I could do it on this stage," said Lysacek, who received a standing ovation after his performance.
Skating third in the field of 19 senior men, Lysacek, 19, cleanly landed all his jumps and performed his Spanish-style short program with maximum effect. Not only did the 2003 graduate of ...
