Article: FIGURE SKATING: Lysacek wins first international senior event

Facing a big challenge, Evan Lysacek overcame it to earn a career milestone. Friday afternoon, the Naperville native won the gold medal at the International Skating Union Four Continents Championships in Gangneung, South Korea. It was his first senior international title.

Battling a case of food poisoning, Lysacek, 19, could manage only five minutes of morning practice. He returned to the hotel and slept for several hours. When he left for the rink, he was still not sure whether he could compete. He said the six-minute warm-up was awful, but he was the last skater in the men's competition and had 45 minutes to marshal his energy.
