Fire destroyed the inside of the historic Kettering Mansion in rural Lemont on Saturday morning. The house has been standing since 1859.

A fire that local officials are calling suspicious gutted the historic Kettering Mansion in Lemont early Saturday morning. According to Lemont Fire Chief Carl Churulo, the fire is suspicious because there are no electricity or gas connections to the vacant limestone house and there was no lightning Saturday morning, two factors that could have caused a fire.

Churulo said the fire apparently started just after midnight, and the blaze could be seen from 131st Street. Crews in fire trucks and a tanker responded. No injuries were reported, he said.
