She was the darling of the dessert league, a radio and television host, a cookbook author and trusted friend with an answer for every cooking conundrum.
The fact she wasn't a real person didn't stop happy housewives across the country from sending Betty Crocker more than 4,000 letters a day at the height of her popularity.
"I wonder if you realize how much you are helping me, or rather I should say `us,' " wrote one appreciative homemaker.
"Your talks ... have given me hope," another fan wrote after listening to her radio program on meal-stretching tips during the Depression.
