GENEVA -- Kane County is taking steps to try to lessen the jail population and the number of beds needed in a new jail.
Officials said the moves are part of managing jail population -- a key component to keeping jail building and operating costs under control.
"Expanding alternative programs has always been an objective of our overall program," said county board Chairwoman Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles.
The board's finance committee this week endorsed a McConnaughay proposal to add two probation officers in the 2006 budget specifically to oversee an expanded electronic monitoring program.
