GENEVA - Kane County officials this week announced some steps to try to lessen the jail population and the number of beds needed in a new jail. Officials said the moves are part of managing jail population - a key component to keeping jail building and operating costs under control. "Expanding alternative programs has always been an objective of our overall program," said County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles.

The board's Finance Committee this week endorsed a McConnaughay proposal to add two probation officers in the 2006 budget specifically to oversee an expanded electronic monitoring program.
