When Palatine's oldest community theater calls it quits, it is bound to be a blow to the arts community.

Even though the rumors of financial struggles and board bickering have wafted for a while, the loss of Village Theatre, Cutting Hall's oldest tenant, is already being felt.

After it became apparent the board was running out of money and steam to operate the Palatine theater, the board voted, a week ago, to dissolve the revered, 54-year-old institution. Village Theatre closes a chapter in the history of community theater, when it stages its final production, "It Runs in the Family," a comical farce by Ray Cooney, on May 21.
