Article: Food baskets help needy

Flush with success after an ambitious effort by two north suburban churches to provide nearly 1,200 Thanksgiving food baskets for those in need, organizers are looking to expand the effort next year with the help of more local congregations.

"Last year we did 120 food baskets at Christmas. This year we decided to expand it and do it at Thanksgiving," said Bill Ferrell, pastor of adult ministries at North Suburban Evangelical Free Church, 200 Lake-Cook Road.

About 200 members of the Deerfield church turned out Saturday to pack 658 food baskets.

"It was a lot of fun. Everyone could do something," said Ferrell, adding participants ranged from children to seniors.
