Fred Miller wasn't buying it, even though he got a good chuckle out of it at Saturday's MSL Meet at Busse Woods in Schaumburg.
"It was the pasta sauce, right?" a fan shouted to Miller, Palatine's boys cross country coach, after Palatine won its second straight league meet.
Miller cracked a wide smile and pretended to agree with the passerby, one night after Palatine's entire program consumed pasta at a dinner party.
Miller knew that heart, guts, determination and otherworldly lungs had more to do with the Pirates' impressive 38-point total than did tomatoes and oregano.
