Article: Museum exhibit recalls Evanston's retail past

Visitors to the Evanston Historical Society can travel back 150 years to the days of the milkman, the grocery boy and the five-and-dime at the society's newest exhibit, "Shop 'Til You Drop: The History of Evanston Retail."

The exhibit, presented through August, documents the history of shopping in Evanston since the Civil War.

"Evanston really was where you came to shop, and it remained that way until the 1950s," said Leslie Goddard, manager of programs and education at the Evanston museum.

Colvin's General Store, formerly at Davis Street and Orrington Avenue, was the very first store in Evanston, opening in 1853; but it also housed a number of other historic events.
