Article: Wilmette man revives art with bamboo fishing rods

Rob Hoffhines' home workshop is not one of those made-for-TV affairs with bright lights and shiny new table saws. This is authentic Old School basement, with stacks of belongings, bare light bulbs and forehead-level pipes laying in ambush for the unwary.

It's not glamorous, but about once every month Hoffhines will craft a piece of art from among this that will command almost $1,000 from the right person.

Hoffhines, of Wilmette, is part of a small brotherhood of fishing rod makers reviving the trade in hand-built bamboo fly rods. "Fly fishing has gone through a great resurgence in the last 15 years. The industry has just gone crazy. This is a subsection of that," Hoffhines said.
