New Trustee Jerry Kayne's idea to have a community picnic on Memorial Day drew criticism this week from the people who have been most involved in observing the day over the years, the American Legion.
Past Deerfield post commander Frank McGovern questioned whether such a celebration was appropriate on a day of remembrance for those who died in war.
"It's like having a dance after a funeral," said McGovern, senior past commander of American Legion Post 738.
Kayne has planned his picnic party for Monday at Jewett Park, following the American Legion's annual ceremony and parade to the cemetery on Waukegan Road.
