Article: District 59 Board debates how to teach fine arts

Although Elk Grove Township District 59 School Board members agree that students need a well-rounded arts education, they have not determined how to provide it.

The board opted Monday to postpone a vote on the elementary school fine arts program until its May 24 meeting, after a lengthy discussion regarding a proposal from Superintendent Robert Howard.

Howard proposed hiring two new fine arts teachers at the elementary level for the 1999-2000 school year. And, although the board approved the hiring of a new orchestra teacher for fourth through eighth grades, members were unsure whether two more teachers were necessary at the elementary schools.
