What's "up on the rooftop" of Emery Nowak's garage often makes people pause. What stands there is a large nativity scene, featuring Mary, Joseph, angels, animals and, of course, the baby Jesus.

"It's the real Christmas," said Nowak, a Gurnee resident. "There's more and more commercialization and people are maybe losing the true meaning of Christmas. This helps remind them of the true meaning."

For the past four to six weeks, Nowak has been working on his holiday tradition of turning his "tranquil village" into Christmas central. Toy soldiers, several Santa Claus statues, angels and trees help Nowak and his guests remember the spirit of Christmas. Festive holiday music from ...
