Article: Gurnee, Vernon Hills tops in sales tax

It sure looks like a horse race where the collection of sales tax revenues are concerned with Gurnee and Vernon Hills running neck-and-neck for 1998 receipts.

Sales tax revenues of $9.23 million rolled into Gurnee, a jump of 14 percent over 1997. Vernon Hills came next with $9.13 million - a whopping 25.2 percent over 1997. Highland Park ran third, generating revenues of $8.34 million.

But after special tax rebates were paid to specific retailers, Vernon Hills had more to put into the bank.

Sale tax rebates returned to developers and retailers are controversial. To some, the agreements smack of the old TV show "Let's Make A Deal."
