Article: Waterway Agency tests new hydraulic dredge

Fox Waterway Agency crews working near Crab Apple Island in the village of Fox Lake are removing navigational hazards and field testing the agency's new hydraulic dredge, which was provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources this year.

"We are removing anything between the surface of the water and a target depth of five feet, said Niels Johansen, agency hydraulic dredging superintendent.

The dredge is located west of Crab Apple Island, just south of the Grass Lake Road Bridge in the main navigational channel between Grass Lake and Nippersink Lake. The river gains velocity as it funnels through the narrows downstream of the bridge. As the flow area widens, the current slows ...
