Paying them a bonus for sticking with their jobs is a move aimed at stemming the high turnover rate of child-care teachers that is backed by children's advocates, business groups and law enforcement around the state.
A measure to pay the supplements, which could range from $200 to $3,000 every six months based on length of service and professional development has beeen passed by the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives.
"If your child-care teacher comes and goes every six months, there's no security, no continuity," said state Rep. Elizabeth Coulson of Glenview, the bill's chief sponsor. "All research has shown that's a real important time in a child's life. I view this as a ...
