E verytime I see an athlete chomping on a piece of gum, I cringe. I think of the danger of sprinting while chewing a glob of sticky stuff, and I feel it's only a matter of time before I witness a mass of Fruit Stripe clogging a kid's esophagus while driving the lane.

Chewing sunflower seeds on the softball diamond, however, is entirely different. I think every baseball and softball player - young or old, boy or girl - should have to learn the art of eating seeds.
