Scott Barclay attended the 2000 U.S. Gymnastics Trials in Boston from Aug. 17 to 20 and enjoyed every second of the competition to determine this year's Olympic team.
Any reflections on what might have been his moment in the national spotlight are dead and buried.
Barclay, a 1974 graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School, was a serious contender for one of six spots on the 1980 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team.
However, the dream for the 43-year-old Barclay, as well as every potential Olympic athlete, began to disintegrate after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid (N.Y.).
