Article: Gurnee residents establish first synagogue in area

With no rabbi and no cantor yet, Barry Gold and Alan Mann have a vision of buying a Holocaust Torah some day for Gurnee's first and only synagogue, Or Tikvah.

Some day they hope to raise enough money to enable the fledgling synagogue to pay up to $10,000 for one of the world's few Holocaust Torahs, ceremonial scrolls Mann said Nazis stole from German Jews during World War II. The Nazis prematurely called the stolen artifacts memorials to an extinct people.

But Now, the founders' hopes center around recruitment and education.

The synagogue, which was officially founded last week, is still seeking a permanent place of worship, along with a congregation and students to attend Hebrew school.
