A Gurnee firefighter, injured in an unusual flash fire recently, is doing well, despite being burned over 20 percent of his body.
Firefighter Robert Szczerba underwent surgery last Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital Burn Center in Milwaukee, where he was doing well following skin grafts to his left hand and arm.
Although Szczerba was burned over 20 percent of his body, surgeons said no more surgery will be needed.
"He is in considerable pain, but he's energetic, his spirits are high and he's well liked," said Fire Chief Tim McGrath Monday. "There are physical challenges in front of him, but no one knows the time frame."
