Article: District 214 approves 3.2 increase in property tax levy

The District 214 School Board approved a $119 million property tax levy last week, which officials said reflects a reasonable tax increase.

But the district's financial picture is far from rosy, considering long-term effects of property tax caps, stunted growth in the district's equalized assessed valuation and no proposed increase in state funding, said Jonathon E. Swanson, special assistant to the superintendent.

The levy reflects a 3.2 percent increase over last year. "This levy is reasonable," said School Board Member Robert Zimmanck. "I think we have shown concern for our students and our taxpayers."
