Article: Home-purchase program targets police officers

Police officers will be encouraged to become first time home buyers under a program that drew favorable interest at Monday's City Council meeting.

The program is based on a very successful initiative instituted to encourage first-time home buyers to purchase in Evanston.

Residency for police officers has been a long-simmering issue. Aldermen tabled a discussion a few years back that might have required police officers to live within a certain radius of the city.

The new program, proposed by the Evanston Housing Corporation and Housing Commission, has a twofold purpose, members of those groups said in their memo to the council.
