Article: Stricter smoking measures weighed

It probably won't be long before cigarette vending machines disappear like a puff of smoke in Palatine.

That's because the Village Board gave preliminary approval to several items Monday which would make it tougher for underage smokers to buy cigarettes in Palatine.

Meeting as the village's Health, Safety and Welfare Committee, trustees recommended a ban on all cigarette machines in town, a new requirement that businesses selling tobacco post signs listing smoking age restrictions and an increase in fines levied against merchants caught selling cigarettes to kids.

The existing $200 fine would increase to $1,000 under the recommended change.
