It's a bad year to be an alewife, and it's not a lot of fun for the workers who have been picking them up off local beaches for weeks.
"It's probably the worst I've seen it in a long, long time," said George Alexoff, the Winnetka Park District's recreation coordinator. "They've continued to get worse and worse," agreed Betty Duguid, the Wilmette Park District's lakefront manager.
The problem is dead alewives, the silvery lake fish that die in varying numbers every spring as temperatures fluctuate, and then proceed to wash ashore. This year, the fish have been doing both with enthusiasm, and beach workers have found the resulting cleanup to be a daily task.
