Nothing in the world may be more natural and healthy for a baby than breast milk, but supplying it to a hungry infant takes more than instinct.
"Even though breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world, it's a learned skill," said Lilibeth MacLean, a LaGrange Highlands mother of three. "In nature, if an ape is born in captivity, she has to be taught how to nurse her baby by a surrogate mom."
Though MacLean read books and attended classes, she also needed coaching after her son was born 15 years ago. She turned to La Leche League International for help, and five years later became a group leader.
That same mother-to-mother mentoring is what launched the organization 50 years ago ...
