A Valparaiso man, who drove a van into a street sign and utility pole, had a blood-alcohol level of more than seven times the legal limit, police said. Malcom C. Johnson, 35, of the 1500 block of Chesapeake Park Drive was seen driving a van south on Roosevelt Road near LaPorte Avenue on Tuesday morning, when he disregarded a stop sign just prior to crashing into the van.

Another witness told police the van swerved in the street as if to miss an object, but there was no object in the street at the time.

Johnson refused a breath test, but police obtained a search warrant to retrieve a blood sample. The test ...
