Heat-related illness and death are clearly related to high environmental temperature, and increased numbers have been seen during urban heat waves in the United States and elsewhere. Although heat-related illness occurs in healthy individuals exposed to extremes of heat and humidity, it is especially dangerous for those impaired by chronic illness, drugs and age.

Humans primarily disperse heat by evaporation through the mechanism of sweating. Sweating can dissipate a tremendous amount of heat. However, in an environment in which high ambient temperatures and humidity exceed the body temperature, heat-loss mechanisms become overwhelmed and heat stroke occurs.
