Article: Eminent domain OK'd for property near Skokie Swift

The village of Skokie almost never uses eminent domain to acquire property, and it is hoping not to have to do so in building a new downtown Skokie Swift station.

But trustees Monday unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the corporation counsel to begin eminent domain proceedings to acquire two pieces of property -- 8152-8200 Skokie Blvd. and 8116 Skokie Blvd.

The properties are occupied by a body shop and garage and a truck rental unit.

Corporation Counsel Patrick Hanley said negotiations with both property owners have been on-going for months and have yielded no progress. The village had the property appraised and has offered the full appraisal, he said.
