As groundwater becomes an increasingly precious resource in suburban communities, several Lake County towns are exploring whether Lake Michigan water may be a viable alternative.
Wauconda, Antioch, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst and Fox Lake have signed on to a study to determine the feasibility and desirability of their towns hooking up to Lake Michigan water.
Lake County, which is spearheading the study, is also evaluating switching to Lake Michigan water for its remaining well-water systems in unincorporated areas, including the Grandwood Park Water System near Gurnee which experienced severe water shortages during drought-like conditions in the summer of 2005.
