It's rare for a supermarket to last 70 years. Only a handful of stores of any type have been around since the Great Depression.
Family-owned Sunset Foods is one of them. Opened in 1937 on Highland Park's Central Avenue in a shop that was less than 900 square feet, Sunset Foods -- now on Green Bay Road in Highland Park as well as in downtowns in Northbrook, Lake Forest and Libertyville, is as popular as ever. At all four stores Feb. 24, crowds showed up to enjoy anniversary cake and beverages. Winners of the "I Love Sunset" essay contest read from their personal essays. Even Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich declared Feb. 24 Sunset Foods' Day throughout the state of Illinois.
