Billy McCurley sets up fireworks in a tent in 2004 in Shorewood. While McCurley was selling only legal fireworks, police are expecting a long weekend of illegal fireworks surrounding the Fourth of July this year.
This year Independence Day falls on a Tuesday - which, for many people, means taking Monday off to create an extended holiday weekend.
Having an extra day or two off for the holiday also likely means a long weekend of illegal fireworks complaints for area police.
Independence Day naturally lends itself to explosive celebrations. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports 70 percent of annual fireworks injuries nationwide happen sometime between June 19 and July 19.
