MINNEAPOLIS - The clock is close to officially ticking down what a growing number of close observers now suspect will be the final weeks of Dusty Baker's tenure as Cubs manager. It might be perceived more correctly as a time bomb. First baseman Derrek Lee is expected to leave today for a rehab assignment with Class AAA Iowa, which likely puts him just days away from a return to the full complement of Cubs.

Baker has long desired that sense of wholeness, and general manager Jim Hendry also has mentioned, while deflecting increasing questions about Baker's shaky job status, that Baker has the right to try to steady this foundering ship with a full deck.
