"Shrek the Third," featuring Princess Fiona, center, plays around with fairy-tale icons such as Cinderella, from left, Snow White, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty - as storytellers have done for ages.
There is no such thing as a definitive version of a fairy tale, which "Shrek the Third" knows all too well.
Disney acolytes may cringe at the movie's irreverent version of Cinderella and other precious princesses, but the truth is these characters have been toyed with for hundreds of years.
In that spirit, we looked at the various early versions of some of these tales and compiled dossiers of sorts on four of the film's iconic characters. Who knew fairy tales involved this much cannibalism?
