Article: Assistant attorney debate continues

Adding an assistant attorney to the village payroll has sparked an argument in Hoffman Estates, with at least one official criticizing the move as a power play.

The Village Board voted 5-2 on July 2 to add an assistant corporation counsel to the village payroll. Trustees Karen Mills and Ray Kincaid opposed the measure.

While Trustee Cary Collins called the addition necessary in the face of increased legal work, Kincaid countered that the move was not in the budget.

Kincaid also questioned the timing of the decision so soon after an election that saw changes in leadership on the Village Board. "We were trying to figure out what is the big hurry," Kincaid said.
