When Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus first met, they had no intention of becoming writers. The two were child development majors at New York University, earning extra money as babysitters for affluent Manhattan families. What they saw in the world of the wealthy shocked them.

"The relationship with the children, from infancy on, did not seem to be highly valued," said McLaughlin.

"And it wasn't just that way with us. It was like that for other NYU students who made extra money as nannies," added Kraus.
