ne of mother nature's most generous gifts is once again heading south.
The local tomato season is beginning to wind down, and with it goes the exquisite and unmistakable flavor of the freshly picked, minimally transported, tasty and tender orb that, some believe, conveys the essence of the Midwestern summer.
Can you find tomatoes in the supermarket deep in December? Of course - but they'll surely have come a long way to get to you. They might be pink, they'll likely be tough and they almost certainly will lack the robust, just-picked taste of the ones that remain in the backyard garden and at area farmstands and farmers markets.
It's only natural to want to prolong their distinct goodness ...
