Unless a 1 percent income tax is enacted before the upcoming session of the Indiana General Assembly, Lake County will sit on an island and not benefit from any legislation to alleviate the present property tax crisis.
Why is this? Ninety-one of Indiana's 92 counties have enacted local option income taxes. Many of these counties have more than one.
Unless Lake County has a 1 percent income tax in effect before Jan. 1, 2008, Lake County taxpayers will be left out of any solution to make the assessment and taxation system fair and equitable. Why?
Lake County has not instituted a local option income tax as a self-help mechanism. ...
