Making the jump from Class A Appleton to the big leagues with the White Sox in 1972, Rich ''Goose'' Gossage never had Hall of Fame dreams. His goals were a little more realistic.

''You never think of going into the Hall of

Fame,'' Gossage said Tuesday. ''All you

want to do is put on a big-league uniform that one time and that one

time lasted 22 years.''

And after nine times on the Hall of Fame ballot, Gossage got his

ticket to Cooperstown, N.Y.

Gossage, whose 22-year major-league career started with a five-season

stay with the White Sox beginning in 1972 and included a one-year

stint with the Cubs in 1988, got 466 votes on the 543 ballots cast,
