Article: No return Lake County Jail program prepares inmates tore-enter society

WAUKEGAN - Kimberly Hawthorne, 18, is filled with hope for the

new year despite the fact that she spent the better part of the last

one in the county lock-up.

Her downhill slide started when she quit high school in the 10th

grade.

"I didn't have my parents behind me," she said.

"It was hard."

But after a felony conviction early this year, Hawthorne finally

found help in the unlikeliest of places - the Lake County

Jail.

The jail's Re-entry Program, staffed by one full- and one

part-time counselor, works with motivated inmates to help prepare

them for a new, improved life upon their release.
