Had he stuck with his original plan to become an engineer, Dr. Raymond Patrick Murphy might not have made history.

Dr. Murphy was part of the team of surgeons who performed the first human organ transplant at Little Company of Mary Hospital in 1950.

Though the organ -- a kidney -- was later rejected by its recipient's body, the transplant surgery paved the way for medical advances.

Dr. Murphy, a physician at Little Company of Mary for more than 40 years, died Monday at the Evergreen Park hospital's hospice center. He was 84.

A self-effacing person, Dr. Murphy shied away from publicity after the transplant, his family said.
