Article: Dropout crisis at CPS demands quick action

Nearly half of all Chicago Public Schools students drop out before graduation.

That's so bad -- so stunning -- it's worth repeating: By June 2005, when CPS' seniors were set to graduate, 44 percent of the class was missing, CPS data released Monday shows. And that's an average, masking the worst record. That belongs to black males: 57 percent dropped out.

We've long known that CPS high schools were falling short, that too many kids were dropping out.
