Some things, like heredity and age, can't be helped, but these major risk factors for heart disease can be controlled.
Tobacco smoke -- Smokers are 2 to 4 times as likely as nonsmokers to develop heart disease. Exposure to second-hand smoke increases the risk of heart disease for nonsmokers.
High blood cholesterol -- Total blood cholesterol should be less than 200. Help keep cholesterol in check with a low-fat diet and exercise.
