Whether she was dragging home a stray barn cat, nursing a baby
pitbull back to health or helping out in veterinary surgery, Ashton
Frieders couldn't get enough of her four-legged friends.
So when Ashton, 20, died in a car accident in January 2007, her
parents, Lori and Chuck Frieders of rural Marseilles, wanted to find
some way to honor their daughter's passion. The flash of
inspiration came about six months after Ashton's death, while
Lori was talking with a girlfriend.
"She said, 'You know, you need to do something to keep
Ashton's legacy going,'" Lori recalled.
"She just came up with this: Ashton's Ark."
